James Hird has thanked Essendon fans for their unrelenting support throughout his coaching tenure.
Hird took on the coaching position for the 2011 season.
He led the side to the finals that year and the club also qualified for the finals in 2013.
Throughout the dips in form and constant media headlines across Hird’s four years as Coach, membership and attendances remained strong.
“My decision to give the players space and a fresh start also applies to the supporters,” Hird said.
“You truly are great people. The Essendon supporters are great people.
“To be an Essendon supporter is something special.
“We are the most successful club in the AFL, mainly due to you – to your unrivalled commitment to our club.”
Hird said the support he received off the field kept him strong throughout the last three years.
“My family and I can not thank you enough for your support,” he said.
“To the individuals who have backed me and the club for the last three years, fought for the truth and believed in justice, I thank you.
“The emails, cards, hugs, handshakes and genuine messages have kept us strong and meant the world.
“I will never forget the people who stood up when most people disappeared.”
