Essendon senior coach Ben Rutten has quashed external commentary surrounding his first two games at the helm coaching directly from the bench.

Rutten was unfazed by some of the external observations and addressed the matter directly with reporters following the Bombers' 54-point loss to Port Adelaide on Saturday.

“It was my second game as coach, and we’ve got a group of (young) guys who I think it’s advantageous for to be down on the bench with at the moment. That doesn’t mean I’ll be down there all game or all year and it’s what I’ve done for the past two games but that’s not set in stone,” Rutten said.

“Certainly there’s a better interaction with the players. To be able to feel what they’re feeling coming off the ground, talking to them directly and understanding when they need a minute, you can certainly have a greater influence that way.”

Speaking to 3AW Sportsday on Monday evening, general manager of football Josh Mahoney said the Bombers’ players "love having him (Rutten) down there".

"Ben has done the last two games from the ground and the feedback from the players is that they love having him down there – he’s a calming influence for them and particularly the past two games we’ve had (against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide), its been important for him to be on the bench,” Mahoney said.

“But in saying that, he’s not locked in to being down on the bench (this season). There’s every chance this week he might be in the box and there will be flexibility around that.

“As long as the communication flow works on game day, that’s the main thing and that decisions are made the right way. The process about communication and how it’s going from the coaches’ box to the players is all I’m worried about.

“Ben is two games into his coaching career, and he wanted to trial being on the ground and he’s seen some positives and some things you don’t get to see. He’ll keep going between the two, and we’ve got scenarios in place as to when he’s on the bench and when he’s in the box.”
