The AFL’s purchase of Etihad Stadium is a big win for the Bombers according to the Club’s Chief Marketing Officer Justin Rodski.
Essendon was the first club to sign up with the Docklands Stadium and featured in the first ever match at the ground in 2000.
The AFL announced today it had signed off on the purchase of the stadium and is expected to formally take over the ownership and management early next month.
“This is a great outcome for the AFL industry, in particular the tenant Clubs at Etihad Stadium,” Essendon Chief Marketing Officer Justin Rodski said
“The AFL can now not only provide a better financial outcome for the Clubs but also drive investment in upgrading the entire precinct to ensure Etihad Stadium remains a world class venue for many years to come.
“There is no doubt this is a big win for Essendon supporters with investment in the venue facilities to focus on enhancing customer experience, fan engagement and ensuring we have a connected stadium with the latest technology.
"We commend the AFL for achieving this outcome for the industry."
Essendon played seven home games at Etihad Stadium in 2016, with the other four at the MCG.
Rodski said the Club would continue to assess the break up of its home matches.
“The changes will take time but this is an important step for the industry and for our Club,” he said.
“As a Club, we will review our stadia position carefully, including current agreements and home ground mix, to determine the best outcome and model for the Essendon Football Club moving forward."
