Essendon recruit Jason Ashby is already putting plans in place for life after football despite having been at the club for just six weeks.
The 18-year-old along with six of his teammates joined draftees from across the league at the AFL Players Association induction camp on Monday and Tuesday.
The camp addressed issues surrounding social media, driver safety, financial planning as well as outlining the rules and regulations of being an AFL player.
Ashby said the session he took the most out of from the camp was about how to best manager your money.
“They spoke to us about coming out of AFL after playing ten years of footy and they couldn’t show anything for it,” Ashby said.
“The key thing that I took was to start early with your education outside of football and not just relying on income from playing footy.
“It is important to be able to have a holistic approach to educating yourself whether that be at University or work outside of football.”
Ashby said the importance of social media was a key issue addressed at the camp.
“Everything is public and you can’t really put a foot wrong on social media anymore,” he said.
“We are using it to promote ourselves and show the Essendon fans what we are about and what we are like away from the football field.”
The second round draft selection has been at the club for six weeks now and feels he is beginning to get used to the rigours of being an elite footballer.
“My body is feeling a lot better now that I have strengthened up and put on a few kilograms,” Ashby said.
“I have fitted in with the boys pretty well, they are all very welcoming and now we are getting into the hard work which I am really looking forward to.”
“I can’t wait to start doing a fair bit of footy skills rather than just running which should be good.”
