Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton will celebrate 200 games against West Coast on Sunday afternoon but it is not a milestone the veteran midfielder will be thinking about until his career is over.

Stanton has been a key cog in the Bombers midfield this season that have played a key role in the Bombers sitting in fifth position just half a game outside of the top four.

As the Bombers come off consecutive losses to Hawthorn and Collingwood the 27-year-old could think of no better way to celebrate his 200 game milestone than a win over the Eagles.

“You would probably look back on it at the end of your career and think it is a good milestone but at the moment we are looking for our fourteenth win for the year and that is all that we are focussed on,” Stanton told BomberTV.

“We have had a couple of disappointing weeks and to get this football club and football team back on track is the most important thing and we can do that against West Coast.”

The Bombers midfielder who debuted in 2004 said while he was pleased to reach 200 matches in the red and black it is the team success that is most enjoyable.

“You first come to the football club hoping you can play one game let alone 200 but I don’t think the personal accolades are what you are after in this sort of environment,” Stanton said.

“You really want to succeed as a team and that is what I am focussing on for the last four matches of the home and away season to get this team back up and winning again.”

“This week is an important game for our football club to move forward and West Coast is our main focus.”

The Bombers have four matches left in the season to regain a top four place that they have held for much of the season.

Stanton said finishing the season on a strong note heading into finals was a key focus for Essendon.

“We haven’t been in this situation in a long time at this football club and it is an exciting time with our younger players and the whole group coming together and we are doing something quiet special at the moment.”
