Comeback Hero
At each home game this season, Essendon will celebrate a Comeback Hero – a former champion who overcame adversity to deliver many happy moments for the Essendon faithful.
The sixth Comeback Hero to be celebrated in season 2017 is Matthew Lloyd who will present the official match ball to the umpires before the game.
Lloyd played 270 AFL games in the red and black, is a five-time All Australian who Captained the Club from 2006-2009.
With 926 goals to his name, Lloyd is the greatest goal kicker in Essendon’s history and the seventh greatest in AFL/VFL history.
James Hird Academy
The Essendon Football will celebrate its James Hird Academy (JHA) tonight when past players such as Barnard, Ramanauskas, Bewick, Daniher, Johnson, Peverill & Lloyd come together with their children for a pre-game guard of honour.
The JHA is a junior development program that aims to identify, attract and nurture young players from father-son draft avenues, non-traditional AFL regions and international zones.
Premiership player and two-time Brownlow Medal winner, Greg Williams, was named Coach of the James Hird Academy earlier this year.
The JHA is made up of three groups: Acceleration Group (16-18 years old), Flight Squad (11-15 years of age) and Baby Bombers (up to ten years old).
