Essendon vice-captains Matthew Lloyd and Sean Wellman have today agreed to new football deals with the club. Lloyd has signed a three-year deal while Wellman has been contracted for the next two seasons.

“We have a very young list and it is important we establish and maintain a leadership group that will guide this club in the right direction. Both of these players are integral to that and we are delighted they have agreed to these deals,” Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said.

At the completion of both these latest contracts, both Lloyd and Wellman will qualify for life membership of Essendon Football Club.

“Matthew and Sean were very reasonable during the negotiating process. They understand the environment we are working in. They are very loyal servants of the club and great team players,” Jackson said.

Jackson said the club was currently addressing the contracts of a number of other players. “I think players and their management understand that we are operating in a very different environment to that of 2000 and 2001,” he said.

“The Total Player Payment allowance has only risen three per cent and much of that will be absorbed in existing contracts. Many clubs may find themselves in a very similar position so the market has turned around to some extent.

“On top of that we haven’t had seasons such as that in 2000 and 2001 when we finished on top of the ladder. At this time we are in eighth position with an average win / loss ratio and facing the prospect of an interstate final in week one. I think our contracts need to reflect that fact.”
