Essendon's non-selected players were put through their paces in a scratch match against the Brisbane Lions at Metricon Stadium on Friday.
Ten Bombers featured across three 20-minute quarters in a 15-a-side match, with several Gold Coast players also featuring in Essendon's side.
Development coach Leigh Tudor has reviewed each of the players' performances below.
Conor McKenna
"McKenna played forward. He was really lively early, kicking two goals in the first quarter. He had really good fall-of-the-ball play and his forward pressure was super all day."
Henry Crauford
"He took three big contested marks against genuine key backs and kicked three goals, so it was really pleasing for Henry. He’s been doing a lot of work after training on his marking and kicking, so to see that come through in his game was really pleasing."
Nick Bryan
"He played full-back and spoiled really well. His closing speed was really good. He probably had four or five spoils where he closed down his man really well. His work below the knees, decision-making and skill execution were at a really good level. He hasn’t played back-line a lot, but his improvement over the last three weeks has been great. He’s been very competitive in the air, which is what we’re looking for."
Matt Guelfi
"He was very strong in the contest. His contested ball and tackling pressure were super. He worked hard to help the defenders as a midfielder and had numerous spoils, and kicked two goals at the other end. He’s been one of our most consistent players and put his hand up (for selection) again."
Dylan Clarke
"He had a good game. He stayed in the contest well and when we won the ball he spread to be used forward. If the opposition had the ball, he worked back hard to defence. He and Phillips won a lot of clearances - they had a good little thing going. 'Clarkey' used the ball well again and ran hard."
Ross McQuillan
"He was aggressive off half-back. He likes to get the ball in his hands and has good skills on his left and right foot. He had a big collision where he landed on his back and hurt his neck, but I really liked the way he got up, didn’t complain and toughed out the last quarter. It was a good game from Ross."
Kobe Mutch
"Mutch played mainly half-back and wing. He had some really good off-ball patterns to help the defenders. Five or six times he got back in line with the ball to help the defenders, and was very courageous in the air. He got a lot of the ball off half-back and set up a lot of the attacking moves. He ran really hard. His work-rate has been incredible the last month."
Andrew Phillips
"Phillips had a really good battle with Zac Smith in the ruck. I thought he was super at centre bounces especially. He had a lot of hitouts to advantage and set up Clarke and Guelfi a lot from his good work in there. He was lively and energetic and took some marks around the ground. His second efforts and follow-up stuff as a ruckman was really pleasing."
Josh Begley
"Begley played mainly on-ball and wing. It was another good effort from him, and he’s been really consistent for us. He ran really hard, especially as a winger, challenging his opponent and setting up a couple of goals by running very hard and to the right spots."
Noah Gown
"He kicked two goals and again presented well as a forward. He marked the ball well. It was a good game from him."
