Jayden Laverde will undergo surgery after scans confirmed the Essendon forward suffered a syndesmosis injury in Sunday's win over Adelaide.

Head of medical services David Rundle said the 24-year-old would be sidelined for approximately six to eight weeks.

“The main concern coming out of the Adelaide game was Jayden’s ankle injury. He got his foot caught in a tackle in the second quarter and wasn’t fit to continue playing. He has sustained a syndesmosis injury (high ankle sprain),” Rundle said.

“He saw a surgeon this morning and he’ll have an arthroscopy later today so it’s likely he’ll be sidelined for about six to eight weeks.”

The Bombers will also be without Orazio Fantasia, with the speedster withdrawn from last week's line-up on Friday after sustaining a minor calf strain.

“Orazio strained his calf in the final main training session before the game last week. An MRI scan confirmed the injury and he’ll look to run in the next seven to eight days, and will probably miss the next three to four weeks,” Rundle said.

Rundle revealed veteran defender Cale Hooker had resumed running as he makes his return from a calf injury.

“Cale is progressing really well. He is 11 days post-calf strain now. He had his first introductory run yesterday and he’ll be another couple of weeks building up before he joins in with the group."

Jake Stringer (syndesmosis) and Harrison Jones (foot) are making pleasing progress with their recoveries, with exciting youngster Jones set to rejoin the main training group as early as next week.

“Both Jake and Harrison are going really well (in the quarantine hub). They are working really well with our rehab coordinator Ashley Lynch and Ash advises me that Jake is tracking very well and probably going to run later this week,” Rundle said.

“Harrison is returning from a stress fracture and provided all goes well this week, he’ll join in and train with us and the main group next week, which is really pleasing.”

Rundle also provided an update on captain Dyson Heppell as he continues with his rehabilitation from a long-term ankle injury.

“Dyson is making really good progress. His ankle range of motion and strength is improving. He will look to commence some run drilling later this week, with a view to resume running within the next fortnight.”
