Essendon midfielder David Zaharakis is on track to kick-start a full pre-season when the team return in November after making solid progress in his rehabilitation from a knee injury.
The 21-year-old’s recovery from a strained medial ligament, sustained in the Club’s Round 20 loss to Collingwood, took a significant step forward today as Zaharakis commenced running drills at Windy Hill.
“The knee is coming along quite well. I didn’t feel any soreness in my knee when I commenced running today so it’s pleasing to know that I am on the right track,” Zaharakis told essendonfc.com.au.
“It’s been four weeks today since I injured my knee. I still can’t move it sideways yet but I have pretty much full range in it and there is no soreness so it is coming along well.
“I have got my own rehabilitation program to do to ensure that I am right in time for the pre-season. Basically every second day I do a bike program and every other day I do a weights session.
“When I started running today it was a bit stiff but once I got going it was fine. I only did a 20 minute session today but I will gradually build that up over the next couple of weeks.”
Essendon’s 2011 fixture will include two byes to enable a 22-game season to be completed across 24 weekends of football. The AFL yesterday announced that next year’s fixture will consist of 19 rounds of eight games and five rounds of seven games to accommodate the introduction of the Gold Coast Suns.
