It was an underdone Essendon side on paper tonight but that wasn’t the case on the field. A spirited Bomber line-up combined beautifully to defeat Hawthorn by an encouraging 53-points. It was a case of the old and the new leading the Essendon charge. Mark Mercuri, Scott Lucas and Mark Johnson were clearly the Bombers best and the engine room behind the important win.
Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy met with a number of senior players this afternoon in a bid to bring the best out of them on the eve of tonight's clash with Hawthorn. Sheedy met with midfielder Joe Misiti and forwards Paul Barnard and Mark Mercuri to highlight the importance of their contribution to the injury-riddled Bombers. ""I wouldn't be surprised if Barnard, Mercuri and Misiti all play well tonight,"" Sheedy told Channel 7 news.
