TRIBUNAL MATCH REVIEW PROCESS

The expected process for the 2009 AFL Season under the AFL Match Review system is that the AFL will issue a media release late on the Monday afternoon after each round detailing the penalties to be offered to players for incidents from that round of matches, or the reasons why no further action was to be taken.

The clubs and players then have until 11am on the Tuesday morning to decide whether to accept the penalty on offer, or whether they wish to contest the charge at a Tribunal hearing, to usually be held on the Tuesday night. The AFL will formally detail all instances on the Tuesday of whether cases will proceed to the Tribunal or not.

Match Review Panel Chairman Andrew McKay will not be available to media queries, as he and his team assess all games and consider all incidents. The following players were reported over the weekend:

Liam Picken, Western Bulldogs, reported by umpire Justin Schmitt for striking Brett Deledio, Richmond, during the second quarter of the Round Three match between the Western Bulldogs and Richmond, played at Docklands on Monday April 13, 2009.

UMPIRE RECOGNITION ROUND

Throughout Round four, the AFL will highlight the development of umpires at all levels of the game and recognise the important contribution umpires make to the success of Australian football matches on a weekly basis. This week all AFL field umpires will wear light green shirts, while goal umpires will wave light green flags, representing some 1800 junior and developing umpires across the country involved in the Green Shirt mentoring program. It is hoped that players, coaches, officials and spectators can identify developing umpires wearing the light green shirts and offer greater levels understanding and encouragement.
