Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro has defended the club’s position in relation to Frankston VFL coach Simon Goosey’s role as a part time scout with the club.
Dodoro said the club had nothing to hide despite today’s reports of unrest among rival clubs in today’s Herald Sun.
“I think it was a massive beat up to be honest,” he said.
“We have utilised some of his services over the past twelve months and he looks at games in that Pennisula area for us.”
“We get no advantage what so ever from a Frankston perspective.”
The report claims there are growing concerns about the Frankston coach’s role with the Bombers following the recruitment of Dylan Van Unen at selection 51 in last week’s national draft.
Van Unen became the third player from Frankston recruited to the Bombers in the last three seasons along with Mark Baguley and Michael Hibberd.
“They are talking about Dylan Van Unen in the report but he is there for everyone to see,” Dodoro said.
“I think it is quite extraordinary and a couple of people being quite insecure to be honest.”
“There is nothing happening behind the scenes at all, he happened to be a player in the draft pool like thousands of others.”
Dodoro said he could not understand why there would be any issue regarding Goosey’s role.
“I don’t see any issue as to why there would be a concern.”
“I think we have a responsibility to support guys at lower levels and we do that with a number of people.”
“If we can give them confidence and exposure to AFL then it is better for our industry so I don’t see how it is an issue at all.”
The Bombers list manager said the club’s strategy at the draft was always to add both Van Unen and Nick Kommer (East Perth) to their list.
“They are later picks and two boys we definitely targeted going into the draft.”
“It was interesting because we knew that Joe (Daniher) was our first pick so we were able to look at the back end of the draft.”
“We wanted to walk out with those two guys as we really believe they can play as early as round one next year.”
