Sean Wellman will play this weekend against the Western Bulldogs and beyond should Essendon progress to the finals. A knee injury has brought Misiti’s career to a close – his last game coming against Carlton in Round 19.
""It is never an easy time for either the club or the player when the careers of champions come to an end,"" Essendon chief executive Peter Jackson said. ""And make no mistake – Sean Wellman and Joe Misiti were champions of this club in the true sense of the word.""
""Both Sean and Joe have been wonderful servants on and off the field. They have always put the club before themselves and for that reason they have been, and always will be, among the most popular players to have walked through the doors at Windy Hill.
""Sean leaves us having joined the club from Adelaide in 1996. He leaves with a Premiership and having been a vice-captain of the club. He has been a wonderful defender whose versatility and courage have been a hallmark of the way he played his football.
""Joe has been a part of the fabric of this football club for more than 15 years and a midfield minus Misiti will have a very different look to it. He has always had an uncanny knack of finding the football and Essendon fans will cherish images of him shuffling from one end of the ground to the other.
""I thank them for everything they have done for this football and wish them well in the future and as with all our past players, they are welcome back any time.""
