Matthew Knights says the club will continue to stick to its vision which he says will deliver success in the near future.
Despite growing media speculation and pressure, the coach says he is focused on getting the best out of the list and has no concerns about his future.
“We are on a plan, on a course with recruiting and list management and we are just going to keep staying that course because we thoroughly believe in what we are doing,” Knights told media.
“When you’re on a journey about staying the course, you keep regenerating your team and we have drafted heavy into our key position players. Last year we went three mids plus Jake Carlisle as a tall.
“It’s about setting up the next period of sustained success for the Essendon Football Club.
“We understand what we’re doing and we’re all very confident about where the group’s headed.”
Knights said that the pressure the club is under will ultimately benefit the players and will further unite the side.
“If our players and staff have to work through the situation that we are going through at the moment it is going to be great for our progress and development,” he said.
“I see it as a positive that we have to go through this at the moment because out of this we work out who are strong people and who will stand beside you.”
Knights said he is relishing his role in rebuilding the side and praised the club’s strong culture and people.
“The best thing about coaching the Essendon Football Club is the reality that this club - which has magnificent history - was heading down the wrong track and had to start again,"" he said.
""We had to start again with a really aggressive vision and we have stripped everything back.
“The great thing about the Essendon Football Club is that it has a strong culture with strong people which, to use a football term, are not going to be moved off the ball easily.”
Want to go to the footy for free AND do your bit to help us tackle cancer? On July 30th we will host our fifth annual Call To Arms match and we need volunteers to help us raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria. This year’s match against St Kilda in Round 18 is particularly important, as it’s our flagship match for our Call To Arms campaign, which invites local sports teams to join the cancer fight too.
