Lovett's lucky number comes up
For Andrew Lovett, the 2009 season is all about grabbing a second chance
Now, he's been given a second chance.
Lovett's indiscretions led to the club announcing before the end of the season that he was on the trade table, but despite talks with the Sydney Swans and Geelong, no deal was done and the 25-year-old remained at Windy Hill.
Despite the tumultuous end to his season, coach Matthew Knights said Lovett faced no issues at Essendon in the future.
"With Andrew, the blunt facts are that we endeavoured to do a trade and it didn't eventuate," Knights said.
"I had breakfast with Andrew a couple of days later, and we sat down and looked at the way we would attack the initial part … and then the year.
"He's been integrated beautifully back into the group; they're very pleased that he's back and he's training well.
"And I think they're most appreciative of the way that … three days later he was in the gym at Windy Hill, pushing weights and getting himself ready for the season.
"It's all about actions for Andrew now, rather than words.
"He's going to have to let his training performance and his footy do the speaking."
Knights said the change was partially due to time doing its thing.
"It's probably more a maturity thing. Andrew came into the AFL system reasonably late, through the rookie system.
"I guess he's still maturing as a person and a player, and I would hope the experience he went through, he'll see the positive elements of it rather than looking at it as a negative.
"The way he's doing things at the moment suggests that – he's not holding any grudges, we're not holding any grudges.
"We're moving on."
