Coach James Hird says he has been pleased with the progress shown by axed key position forward Jay Neagle.

Neagle was delisted last fortnight after failing to meet the physical standards required by the team.

He has been promised a rookie spot should he meet the required standards in time for this year’s rookie draft.

“Jay has been training really well and doing some extra sessions to get his body where it needs to be in time for the draft,” Hird said.

“We have set some standards that he needs to meet and I am pretty confident that he will meet them.

We have spoken about the targets that he needs to meet to be an Essendon player and if he is able to meet those, then we will be true to our word.”
