Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd is expected to play his first competitive game of football in almost 10 months when he takes part in an intra-club practice match at Princes Park this Saturday morning. Lloyd, who basically missed the entire 2006 season with a serious hamstring injury, has trained strongly this week and looks a certain starter in the match that starts at 10.15am.

Lloyd's form on the track this week has alleviated any fears that a mild hamstring strain three weeks ago was anything more than what was diagnosed. Yesterday he led strongly from the goal-square in the final half-hour of a 90-minute training session, confirming he is back in peak shape.

""I went 100% for the entire session and it felt good. It was never anything major - it was more of a spasm in the muscle but we thought it was best to give it a three-week break. To be honest it probably did me the world of good - I have been training pretty hard and the short break has freshened me up,"" Lloyd said today.

""I’m pretty sure I will play in this weekend's intra-club practice match and will play in the opening game of the NAB Cup. I will be in Darwin but I am not sure if a decision has been made on whether I play in the All Stars game. I could if they wanted me to but they may want to go a different way.""

Lloyd was shadowed by former Lion Mal Michael for much of yesterday's competitive work at Windy Hill and he was made to earn every kick.

""Mal has been great since he arrived at the Club and his work ethic on the training track is great. He certainly makes you earn every kick and that is a good thing. He is very experienced and the younger players are really getting some benefit out watching him go about his business and listening to him,"" Lloyd said.
