Essendon key forward Michael Hurley has been put on a modified training program as a precaution after experiencing tightness in his hamstring last week.

High performance manager Dean Robinson said the club is monitoring Hurley closely in order to have him in his best possible condition for the 2012 season.

""He pulled up a bit sore during a testing drill when he returned to pre-season training after the Christmas break,"" Robinson said.

""He was feeling fine and everything was going along nicely until he felt tightness in his hamstring so we pulled him out of training and had a look at him because we don’t want to take any risks.""

Robinson said he expects Hurley to be back in full training at the start of February and fully fit for the start of the home and away season.

""We've given him the time off and putting him through all the proper rehab,” Robinson said.

“We are probably being a little bit more cautious than we need to but for someone so valuable we are going to take the time and make sure we get him right.""
