Some of what the fans had to say:

“Great Season, stood up well. Fantastic in the back line just when we needed him, and puts in his 100% wherever he is on the field.” Johanna Young.

“Often under-rated playing the hardest position on the ground CHF, Scotty went to a new level as a dashing half back. He can still kick goals when playing down back so if his defensive skills keep improving he can be a double-edged sword to the opposition.” Ross Jones

“Started slowly, but when shifted to CHB really became a dominant player for the remainder of the 2002 season. A real champion.” Robert Murray.

“Just a magnificent year. I feel he really stood up and was counted when things were tough and played his best footy in the big games at the end of the year. Best player of the year for mine though the Johnsons were great. Love to see him settle at CHB though he probably loves the forward line.” Janaka Williams.

“I was one of the knockers when Scotty was at half forward. Now I am a believer with him in the backline. Sensational end to the season. Seems to lift as Jason Johnson fades!” Stephen Hansford.

“Revelation at CHB - hope he stays there. Read the play exceptionally well in the back half. The move back gave him more freedom to run with the ball.” Glen Smooker.

“Scotty had a sensational end to the season when moved down back and I (like all Bomber fanatics) look forward to 2003 to see if Scotty can handle the pressure down back week after week. I think he will be in the top 5 in the B & F in 2003 as it suits him to run straight ahead and his 50metre plus kicks from the backline really open the play up. Go Scotty.” David Beasley.

“Missed early games and then came back and played inconsistently. Absolute revelation when switched to defence and regained confidence. Keep up the good work Scotty!” Jarad Dyer.

THE WASH UP:

Essendon supporters said Lucas’ finish to the season was magnificent and they fully expect that he will make centre half back his home in 2003. They said his reading of the play and his raking left foot will make Essendon a dangerous side on the rebound in 2003.

MARK HARVEY SAYS:

There is no doubt Scott played his best football for the season at centre half back. I think he can take a lot of confidence out of the way he finished off and he must start in the same way in 2003. I still think he gives us an excellent target and centre half forward but he now gives us options. He must be a real leader for us next season.
