Essendon Chairman David Evans has joined the call for better crowd behaviour at the football and urged all fans to be more respectful when attending games.
Evans, who sat with the Essendon cheer squad during the Bombers win against the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium, said his experience was extremely rewarding and provided a perfect example of how fans should behave.
“Sitting in the cheer squad, there was a sense of real joy and excitement at being embedded in the moment,” Evans said.
“The songs were funny and tasteful about the players and they were incredibly passionate but also respectful for the opposition at the same time.”
""I was incredibly proud of the way the fans behaved.”
Evans acknowledged it is almost impossible to completely stamp bad behaviour at the football but said all fans can make a difference by improving their standards at the game.
“We want our fans to be passionate and always supporting our team in full voice but if that enthusiasm over steps the mark and becomes offensive or disrespectful, then it isn’t helping anyone,” Evans said.
“It’s always important to remember why we go to the football and how lucky we are to be able to enjoy our indigenous game every week”
