Essendon football operations manager, Paul Hamilton, has defended Andrew Lovett following comments made by Port Adelaide's Chad Cornes today.

Speaking to media, Cornes said Lovett should be 'disappointed' for his comments to the tribunal last night regarding an incident with Dean Brogan at the start of the quarter-time break.

""I find it hard to believe that Andrew has come under attack for telling the truth,"" Hamilton said.

""The umpire was five metres away from the incident and Dean was suspended because of the umpire's evidence, not because of Andrew's statement.

""There are penalties for players that don't tell the truth and Andrew has done the right thing. He has clearly not breached any player code.

""Andrew has accepted Dean's applogy for his actions and we think that should be the end of the matter.""

Hamilton said that the club was happy Lovett remained focused on the game and showed a good level of maturity.
