Essendon resumed pre-season training today, kicking off the new year with a fitness testing session at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.

Small forward Angus Monfries said the playing group returned in good shape and were enthusiastic about the pre-season ahead.

“I think everyone was excited to get back into it today and there was a really positive atmosphere among the playing group,” Monfries said.

“The guys are looking forward to this part of pre-season training because it is a lot more game related. Games are just around the corner now and our practice matches aren’t too far away.

“It’s also always good to be back and be able to catch up with everyone and see how their holidays were. We always have a chat over the phone during the break but it is good to be back and to have a laugh with the guys.”

The players were put through a yo-yo test in the morning, followed by a repeated speed test in the afternoon which consisted of a number of 20 metre sprints.

“I think Stu Cormack our fitness coach was pretty impressed with the way everyone came back and the shape everyone returned in. I think there were a few PBs set today as well which was really pleasing,” Monfries said.

The 22-year-old South Australian returned home to Adelaide for his Christmas break, spending time with his family and putting his fishing skills to the test.

“It was good to have some time off. I went on a fishing trip to Kangaroo Island with a couple of mates which was a lot of fun,” he said.

“We caught a number of large Australian salmon and a few big King George whiting so I would rate it as an very successful trip.”
Meanwhile, Essendon would like to advise supporters of a small delay in the mailing of 2010 membership packs (packs were originally planned to be sent during the week of 16th December).

The unexpected delay is due to a number of factors including strikes at Australia Post and an upgrade of the Essendon’s  IT systems (which will ultimately improve the accuracy of club information).

Membership packs have started hitting mailboxes and the majority will be received in mid to late January 2010.
