Richards showed great promise early last season playing at centre half forward in the VFL side. To step straight out of under 18 football and play that role was a big ask and looked tired late in the season. It is however a year which he will benefit from greatly. The raps are big on this young man and we are yet to see the best of him.
VFL coach Terry Daniher used Richards in a variety of roles during the season and that will also have been an important part of his football education. He played the majority of his TAC Cup days as a forward but he might just find himself playing in a key defensive position this season. With Dean Wallis no longer at the club, the Bombers are looking for their next tall defender and Richards may be that man. Dustin Fletcher and Aaron Henneman are probably the key tall defenders for Essendon with Danny Jacobs and Mark Bolton other options. If injury or form become a problem for any of these players, Richards may be asked to step up.
One thing Richards doesn't mind is the physical stuff. He makes the opposition earn the football and when a collision looms he won't take a backward step. He will be looking forward to the football season proper getting underway and trying to force his way into what is a very good side. He might just be one of the big improvers in 2002.
What will his role be on match day?
Richards may start at centre half back in the VFL side as the Bombers' search for possible key defenders. He could also be pushed to full back but Sam Hunt looks likely to play that role. He will certainly spend sometime at centre half forward where his marking ability is more than useful.
What will the coaches expect on match day?
The coaching staff will want Richards to continue to improve and take on every challenge thrown in front of him. They will want him to be fierce in his attack on the football and use his height and pace to create opportunites for those around him. They will also expect him to work extremely hard on his disposal which can ocassionally let him down.
