Dean Solomon tonight spoke for the first time about the devastating knee injury that ended his 2002 season and the emotional 48 hours that followed. The brilliant 22-year-old defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a VFL practice match against Williamstown last Friday. ""I heard the snap and as soon as I hit the ground I knew I was gone. It was very painful and I could feel bone on bone,"" Solomon said tonight. He is determined to get back in the red and black as soon as possible.

Solomon said he has been staggered by the support he has recieved from teammates and others in the football community since injuring his knee. ""The guys have been awesome and I have spoken to them all. You don't realise how many close mates you have in football,"" Solomon said. ""I have also had calls from Bomber Thompson, Darren Bewick, Damien Hardwick, Michael Prior and others.""

Solomon also received a call and a visit from assistant coach and close friend Mark Harvey. Harvey revealed on Bomber Radio on Sunday night that he had found it hard to look Solomon in the face when he saw him in the rooms following the injury. ""Harvs left a message and it was really inspirational. He said he knows a lot of blokes who have gone through this and come back. He said he would stick by me every step of the way and that we would work through it together. It was great because I was pretty down straight after it.""

Solomon said the injury had seen him contemplate life after football for the first time in his career. ""I suppose you don't know what you have got until it is gone,"" Solomon said. ""I've never really thought about life without football and it is pretty upsetting when you do that for the first time. I was in a bit of a daze for the first four or five days. But I have got over that now - I'll keep my head up and get on with the job of getting back to full fitness.""

Solomon will be operated on next Wednesday but has already started with some light physiotherapy. ""I am also doing some very slow walking. I am off the pain killers now,"" Solomon said. ""It is going to be 12 months of hard work but I will do whatever it takes.""
