Matthew Lloyd has today officially been announced as the new captain of the Essendon Football Club. The announcement was made by coach Kevin Sheedy at a press conference this afternoon. Lloyd takes over the role from James Hird, who has been captain of the club since 1998. ""It’s a humbling experience,"" Lloyd said of his appointment.

""I was going through the names before in my time, and you think of Hird, O’Donnell, Thompson, Watson, Madden and Daniher. They are unbelievable names and the club doesn’t take it lightly who they give the captaincy to.

""I will enjoy it today, but come first day back at pre-season I will take it pretty seriously and where I expect the club to be,"" Lloyd explained.

""I feel the time is perfect, I probably wasn’t ready 12 months ago and it probably over awed me, but at the moment I am as excited going into a season than I have been ever. This will be a great challenge in bringing out the best in my football, because I will thrive on it.""

Sheedy took the opportunity today to acknowledge the contribution James Hird has made to the club as captain.

""I would like to thanks James Hird for being a marvellous captain in the previous position, he has been a fantastic player for our club and along the way Matthew Lloyd has been a great supporter as vice captain,"" Sheedy said.

""But now it is Lloyd’s opportunity to show what he is capable of with the young team we have got him over the last year of two and I am really looking forward to seeing what Matthew brings to the team.

""I think where Matthew’s can really put his hand up is with players like Kepler Bradley, Courtney Johns, Lovett, Lovett-Murray, Stanton, Dyson because this is his team now.""

And Lloyd is looking forward to continue learning from his predecessor next season.

""It’s fantastic what he is doing, because he could have easily gone on as captain for another 12 months because he is still in our best one or two players, but it is just going to be beneficial for life after James Hird to have him here next year,"" Lloyd explained.
