Construction is well and truly underway at the site of the club’s new High Performance Centre being built near Melbourne Airport.

Essendon chairman David Evans said it is exciting to finally be able to see the club's vision for a new training base becoming a reality.

“The professionalism of the game now demands the players have the best facilities to be able to perform,"" Evans said.

""It is to do with the preparation of players through not only physiotherapists and doctors but also the equipment that we are putting in front of them.""

“When free agency comes up a player manager and a player will look for state of the art facilities to make sure they get the most out of their career.

“In the modern day, facilities have got a life span of about 5 years before they need a refresh.”

Building works have only just begun but the aim to have the team training on the new ovals by the start of the 2013 pre-season is on track.

Evans said the club was continuing to work towards delivering the centre debt free.

“The fundraising campaign is going well and we have had great support from the federal government as well as our large private benefactors who have dug deep,” he said.

“The membership campaign has about 2.4 million dollars to go, with an aim to do this project without taking on debt.""
