Shannon Grant comment (thanks to Bendigo Advertisor):

HAVING played AFL football for more than 14 years of my life, I never really got to go along and watch other games on the weekend simply because I was always too consumed with preparing for my game and then worrying about rehab and recovery the following day.

So last Sunday’s Anzac Day match at the MCG was a great opportunity for me to be able to do that.

Two big Melbourne clubs playing off on Anzac Day has become a great tradition.

I was really looking forward to going to watch the senior side, hopefully knock off Collingwood.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we were after, but it did open my eyes to the behaviour of some grown adults that I have never seen before and hope to never see again.

As the Bendigo Bombers team had played the day before, we were lucky enough to sit in the old coaches box in the southern stand and take in the action.

As the game went on, the more embarrassing it became to watch the behaviour of grown adults sitting in the outer with friends and in some cases, young children.

The swearing and abuse that was coming out of their mouths and the aggressive behaviour really made me sit back and think about what the game is supposed to be about.

It made me think about the responsibility that we have as adults to act in a mature manner, especially around kids who are simply there to enjoy a day out with their parents and friends.

I know we are only talking about a small minority, and most people just want to cheer and enjoy their footy, but it made me think twice about whether I would be comfortable having my kids exposed to such poor behaviour.

You hear so much about the attitudes and behaviour of parents across all levels of sport - good and bad - and I believe it is an important part of life.

As parents and role models we have an obligation to set a strong example for our kids.

Our children are an extension of us and it’s our responsibility to remember the important role that we need to play in their lives.

I encourage anyone who witnesses poor behaviour at sporting events to report it because there really is no need or place for it.
