Essendon supporters thought Matthew Lloyd was a standout player for the Bombers in 2004. Most felt he did a terrific job to finish with 96 goals despite the team’s supply from the midfield being less than ideal in many games. They felt he showed terrific leadership and should play more at centre half forward.

What some of the Essendon fans had to say:

""In reality, probably Matthew Lloyd's best season. In a season when delivery to him was inconsistent, he missed out on another Coleman Medal by the narrowest of margins, pipped by a full forward that had been spoon fed all year. Lifted when the team needed him most - when James Hird was injured. A genuine centre-half forward prospect,"" Paul Shelbourn.

""In the words of Jack Dyer a good ordinary player. The Matthew Lloyd we want is the one who came to play against Port Adelaide, crunched Cornes and dominated the game with seven goals. The Matthew Lloyd we get is the one who is yet to play a good finals game or win a best and fairest,"" John Harink.

""Another great year from Lloyd who is still the standout full forward of the competition as still contributes in his quiet games. What a joke he and Hird weren't All-Australian,"" Steven Barker.

""Matty worked harder than any year previously, and would have kicked more goals if their had been more supply - but still created many opportunities for anyone around him. He also proved himself as a Centre Half Forward option, and stamped himself as the next Captain,"" Darren Matthews.

""Matthew had a great season and deserved the 100+. Considering the lack of supply out of the midfield he did extremely well to kick 96. He is more than a full forward. Who will forget his impact in the Port game?"" Brian Dempsey.

""When Lloyd has a bad one it usually means the side does.Showed true leadership this year and the potential to play across half forward. Needs more help up forward so that he is not always double teamed. If we get it in quick he is unstoppable on a lead. Great effort to get 96 goals as he had to work a lot harder for them this year,"" Garry Fisher.

""Everyone talks about Hird, but LLoyd even polled more Brownlow votes - an award usually won by mid fielders. He is a craftsman who obviously works on his goal kicking skills with dedication and determination. He has also stepped up as a leader when called on, but always leads and plays for the team, and not for individual glory. I hope he has many more years as our leading goalkicker, and an inspiration to all those kids out there who follow Essendon, and wear his number on their jumpers. You couldn't find a better role model,"" Annette Edgar.

""Lloyd took another step this year. His leadership credibility was further enhanced particularly during the Port Adelaide match, his importance was again highlighted given the lack of supply and the lack of support in the forward 50. And as to where Lloyd should play ... well its a difficult question, but I believe Lloyd has the ability to dominate the centre half forward position if the likes of Laycock, Hille and Cupido can start kicking bags of goals,"" Paul Bosher.
