Essendon has decided to contest the one-week ban handed down to Heath Hocking by the AFL Match Review Panel at the tribunal tonight.

Hocking has been charged with a level one rough conduct offence against Eagle Daniel Kerr.

Hocking does not risk a longer penalty if unsuccessful at the Tribunal, but Bombers football manager Paul Hamilton said the club believed Hocking's action to be fair.

""We think it's all about the reasonableness of the tackle so that's what will be presented at the Tribunal this evening,"" Hamilton said at Windy Hill on Tuesday.

""We will challenge the verdict of the Match Review Panel and it will be up to the Tribunal to determine whether the tackle was reasonable,"" he said.

Hamilton said the history of sling tackles this season - Melbourne's Jack Trengove was controversially suspended for three games for a tackle on Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield which created widespread debate - meant the club was not surprised Hocking was cited.

""There was a bit of publicity about it so we knew they would certainly have a look at it,"" he said.

""We understand where they're coming from, but it is in the system that we have a right to challenge that decision.""

Meanwhile, Hamilton supported the panel's decision to not cite Eagle Beau Waters for his bump on Jobe Watson, which left the Essendon captain concussed.

""They've got a lot of things to consider and I can actually understand where they were coming from with that one,"" Hamilton said.

""That's all fair and reasonable.""
