You only have to take one look at Mark Mercuri to see he has put in a decent pre-season. The 28-year-old is looking exceptionally fit and gauging by his positive attitude is ready to play some good football. After a disappointing 2001 - Mercuri is fired up and keen to put last year behind him. ""I had a very disappointing season last year - both form and injury. From a personal point of view I probably have a bit to prove - to myself and the people at the Essendon Football Club. At this stage of my career I don't really need to be spoken to - you know if you have played well or not. I know last year wasn't a great year personally,"" the vice-captain said.

In his 11th season with the Bombers Mercuri is hoping to play a similar role to the past few season. ""In terms of position - I will be looking at a forward, mid-field role - as I have played in the past few years. I don't think much will change there,"" Mercuri said. Mercuri only kicked ten goals last season and is hoping to improve his conversion rate in 2002. Another area Mercuri is hoping the team can lift is in the mid-field. ""Our rotation through the centre was a little bit lacking last year due to injuries and probably lack of form in a few instances. This year we have a few more options we can run through the centre,"" said the 1999 best and fairest winner.

The injury to Dean Solomon during Friday's VFL practice match was not only devastating to Solomon but the entire team. Mercuri was disappointed by the injury to his teammate and has been helping Solomon come to terms with it. ""It is a shame from his personal perspective and it will be a hard spot to fill because he as we all know is a top player - but I suppose the positive from the situation is it gives someone else an opportunity.""
