In celebration of Cultural Diversity Week, Essendon staff recently engaged in a multicultural morning tea where they tried different foods representing the various cultures at the club with the hope to learn a bit more about each other.
The event was held as part of A Taste of Harmony which is about recognising and celebrating the rich cultural diversity that exists in Australian workplaces through food.
A Taste of Harmony's vision is for all workplaces – big or small – to participate by gathering colleagues together over a delicious lunch made up of foods from different lands, either at their workplace or at a participating restaurant.
“We have many people from different backgrounds and cultures working here at Essendon, from Brazil to China, Somalia to Syria,"" Essendon multicultural development officer, Jieh-Yung Lo said.
""It was really exciting learning more about each other through the A Taste of Harmony campaign.
“As we were going through our personal stories, a really interesting point made by one of our staff was that as children of migrants, we do sometimes take things for granted.
“I have had the opportunity to learn about my heritage and culture from my parents. I was raised in a very traditional Chinese family in Australia and my values and ethics are a convergence of the two cultures. In a society where we celebrate their traditions and heritage, we must continue to embrace our culture and share it with our peers.”
The Essendon Football Club has been a strong supporter of the A Taste of Harmony campaign and would like to offer our congratulations to the Scanlon Foundation and the Australian Multicultural Foundation for this fantastic initiative.
