VFL coach Paul Corrigan made an interesting move on Sunday afternoon when he pulled two fit players in Jason Ashby and Shaun McKernan from the field early in the third quarter.

Following the match, it was revealed that the call had been made for the two to be rested ahead of a potential call up for Friday night’s AFL blockbuster against North Melbourne.

So who else is firming in line for an AFL call up? After a trip to Perth and just a six-day break before the Bombers go head-to-head against the Kangaroos there could well be a few changes on Thursday evening.

Shaun McKernan

If the Essendon coaches are looking for someone to give Tom Bellchambers a chop out at AFL level, then Shaun McKernan could be their man. He continues to dominate at VFL level and is banging down the door for AFL selection. McKernan had 16 hitouts as well as picking up 23 disposals on the weekend highlighting his mobility for a big man and his ability to cover the ground.

Jason Ashby

After having a taste of AFL action earlier this season, Jason Ashby has done his chances of a recall into the lineup no harm. Ashby had 13 disposals and a monster nine tackles up until he was pulled from the game.

Kurt Aylett

This guy just keeps getting better and is continuing to grow in stature every game this season. Aylett continues to demonstrate his ability to play anywhere on the ground.  He played his best game on the weekend and picking up the best-on-ground medal after 29 disposals, seven marks and four tackles in a performance that is sure to put his name in the mix for a game against North Melbourne on Friday night.

Shaun Edwards

Edwards had his most consistent game of the season against Coburg, the coach individually commending him for his performance after the match. Edwards has all the skill to regularly lock down a senior spot in the AFL lineup and is beginning to harness it.  He gathered 21 disposals, had five tackles, booted a goal and was named among the Bombers best on the weekend.
