If ever a player set a fine example for those around him it is Peverill. But he wasn’t the only senior Bomber doing the hard yards. Aaron Henneman who also recently signed a one-year deal with the club was out there beginning his preparation for what shapes as the most important year of his football career.
""Aaron understands this is a very important season for him,"" Essendon assistant coach Mark Harvey said. ""He missed a lot of football because of injury over the past few years and he knows where his career is at. It has been really frustrating for him and it is good to see him doing this extra work early – we didn’t ask him to take part, he wanted to be there.""
""It is great to see Damien actually running at this time of year. What he has done during the season over the past couple of years is a credit to him because he basically hasn’t done a pre-season – he has constantly been dogged by stress related injuries. It is a real bonus to see him out there at this time of year.""
Rookie-listed players Nathan Lovett-Murray and Andrew Lovett were also among the 25-strong squad.
""Again, these players know where they are at and that they have to get better,"" Harvey said. ""Nathan played 20 games last season which was a terrific effort and he knows what it is all about now and where he needs to improve. He has gone back to the rookie list and he could easily have taken that the wrong way and not been bothered with doing this bit extra.""
The majority of the Essendon squad will return to training next Monday with the balance of players returning over the following two weeks.
