Essendon defender Courtenay Dempsey is feeling positive about his return to football just two games in to his comeback from a knee reconstruction last year.

The 24-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in Round 4 against Carlton last season, alongside fellow paceman Jason Winderlich.

Dempsey, who played a key role for the Bombers following their two-point win over Sydney on Friday night, said he was focused on an injury-free 2012 season.

“I’m feeling fine. I did a bit of twisting and stepping off it during the game and it felt good,” Dempsey said.

“I didn’t have any worries during the game so I think I have got the demons out of my head and now I feel good.”

The win against Sydney in the NAB Cup was the Bombers’ first of the pre-season and Dempsey said the team benefited from a tough hit out.

“The key message to take out of the game was the importance of consistency over the full four quarters,” he said.

""We did have a part there where we were down and out for half a quarter but we stuck at it and got back into the game which showed our resilience as a team.

“We weren’t really looking at the result in the game but we were looking at whether we moved on from last year and improved.”

Coach James Hird said the return of both Dempsey and Winderlich would provide a huge benefit to the Bombers’ line-up.

“Courtenay has got exceptional talent and I think the knee (injury) has taught him a lot about the game and life too,” Hird said.

“I think that we’re seeing a guy come in to some really good football and I hope he stays injury free because he’lll get that if he does.

“Jason is a really good leader for us out on the ground and we missed his leadership when he got injured last year. We missed his play and his brilliance and speed.”

The Bombers now turn their attention to their final pre-season match this Saturday against Brisbane at Visy Park from 3.30pm.
