The 2011 GLoBALL season came to a thrilling close yesterday, with hundreds of Australia’s newest migrants taking part in the GLoBALL cultural celebrations before Essendon’s come-from-behind seven point victory over Port Adelaide.

The GLoBALL program, an initiative run by the Essendon Football Club in partnership with Cricket Victoria, seeks to enable international students and new migrants settle into life in Australia, and aims to use sport as a vehicle to engage new migrants into the wider Australian community.

GLoBALL aims to promote a sense of belonging, social inclusion and celebrates diversity while providing a number of opportunities for new migrants to interact with the Essendon Football Club.

Sunday afternoon’s celebrations of the GLoBALL program at Etihad Stadium included cultural performances including Bhanagra performance by SAANJH Bhanagra Group, as well as football lessons from 2011 International Cup participants and many more activities.

Key midfielder Heath Hocking joined in all the pre-match fun, presenting GLoBALL ambassadors with certificates of recognition.

Essendon's multicultural development officer Kashif Bouns said the success of this year's GLoBALL program was due to the hard working efforts of all ambassadors and volunteers.

“The popularity of this program and the doors that it opens to people who traditionally have no knowledge about AFL is particularly pleasing,"" Bouns said.

""It just shows that Australian Rules Football can really bring people together of all backgrounds and that is what the GLoBALL program is all about.

“I would encourage everyone to get further involved in the GLoBALL program as ambassadors or volunteers.""
