Essendon players and staff have opened their hearts and wallets to support the less fortunate this festive season.

Led by newly appointed captain Jobe Watson, Essendon’s entire playing list have dug deep to support Wesley Mission’s food appeal through cash and food donations.

The club’s general manager of community and media Simon Matthews said he was pleased with the players’ willingness to support the less fortunate during the Christmas period.

“Essendon Football Club is genuine in its commitment to the community and it is particularly important to show our support at this time of year,” Matthews said.

“I am genuinely pleased to see our players drive this initiative, it is fantastic to see them involved at their instigation.

“The entire playing group have made cash donations totalling over $2000 and there has also been a significant amount of food donated from the playing group and administration staff.

“We can’t forget that needy families rely on food and monetary donations throughout the festive period and I am glad that Essendon Football Club can be of assistance.”

Wesley Mission’s executive manager of community relations Grant Thomas was grateful for Essendon Football Club’s support.

“Christmas can be an especially hard time for families doing it tough but a little bit of assistance can go a long way,” Thomas said.

“Wesley is grateful to all involved at the Essendon Football Club and praises them for being a leader in their commitment to the community.”
