The Long Walk invites you to celebrate the second annual Women's Luncheon in Adelaide on Friday 3 August.
The Long Walk Women's Luncheon has been a successful event in Melbourne for seven years and this year, will be proudly presented in Adelaide for the second event in celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
The Long Walk is a charity inspired by Essendon’s own Michael Long and his inspirational walk to Canberra to get indigenous issues put back on the national agenda. Today, the charity helps raise awareness of issues such as health, wellbeing and life opportunities among indigenous communities.
Jessie Mabo, the daughter of lands rights activist Eddie Mabo, will be the keynote speaker at the presitigous event. She will address her family perspective on the 10 year court case, her work in indigenous rights and will encourage other indigenous women to step up to leadership roles.
Other special guests will include Eva Knowles Johnson, a well renowned indigenous Australian playwright, Khatija Thomson who is the South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement and Michael Long himself.
The luncheon is to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre. There are limited tickets remaining - to purchase tickets to the highly anticipated event, click here. If you cannot attend but wish to make a contribution there is also an option to donate places at the luncheon for women who have limited funds available to them.
In addition, Essendon Football Club is also proud to support a new state-of-the-art learning and leadership centre name after Essendon champion and the Long Walk’s creator Michael Long for young Territorians. The Michael Long NT Thunder Learning and Leadership Centre will encourage young indigenous Australians to develop life skills and a love for sport while reinforcing education in a bid to close the gap. The Centre will have a variety of facilities such as a gymnasium, pool, lecture theatre and classrooms and enough accommodation to house 70 people.

Essendon coach James Hird said the defensive pressure around the ground must improve for the Bombers to regain the strong form they displayed in the first half of the season. Hird said over the last few weeks the ball had simply not been kept in the Bombers forward half of the ground for long enough.
