General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said the 22-year-old would undergo a fitness test later this week.

“He had a very minor hamstring injury and had a couple of weeks off to get himself right,” Hamilton said.

“Now it is very important to get him back in to the side to give the forward line a little bit more structure.

“Clearly we’re not in our best form and we have some real challenges ahead but we feel that we are ready for them,” he said.

Hamilton also clarified recent media reports suggesting Alwyn Davey had accumulated a soft-tissue injury during Essendon’s 94-point loss to Hawthorn.

“There were no injury concerns with Alwyn and he was subbed out because we felt that we had too many small forwards,” he said.

“It was a strategic move more than anything and he will be available this week.”

Tayte Pears, Cale Hooker and Ricky Dyson are all in line for senior selection this week too after Pears dominated with a best-on-ground performance for Bendigo Gold on the weekend.

“Tayte was really impressive in the VFL and will certainly be in line for senior selection,” Hamilton said.

“Cale Hooker will also be available after he was a late withdrawal on Friday night as will Ricky Dyson so we have a number of players in line.”

“Adelaide are always hard to beat over there, but we will be up for the challenge. We need to rebound and make sure we play a better brand of football than we have in the last two weeks.”

Hamilton said a number of players would be closely monitored this week to determine their availability for the clash against the Crows at AAMI Stadium.

“We have found that we are getting a number of players pulling up sore or injured coming in to the main training session for the week so we’re going in to this week hopeful that we don’t have any injuries from the weekend.”

“(Brent) Stanton was able to play on despite his soreness so we will hope that he will be right but we will monitor him closely throughout the week.”

In addition, members of the main rehabilitation group are all in contention to make return to football in the coming weeks, including key midfielder David Zaharakis and Paddy Ryder.

“They are all progressing well but it is unlikely any of those players will be available for selection this week.”

“Pleasingly, both Paddy and Michael (Hibberd) are only a week away at this stage and David is probably only two or three weeks away.”
