James Hird added another award to his long list of achievements, when he was named the TAG Heuer Player of the Year earlier today. Hird isn’t the only person to come away with the win. For voting in the weekly competition, Essendon supporter Laura Gorski from Hampton Park has won two tickets to the forthcoming Crichton Medal and will present Hird with his award on stage.

Similar to previous years, the TAG Heuer Player of the Year voting was close this season with a number of players able to win the award. Despite missing six games in 2003, Hird’s outstanding performances in the second half of the season ensured the victory. Hird finished with 13 goals for the year and had the team’s third highest amount of kicks behind Scott Lucas and Jason Johnson.

Bomber spearhead Matthew Lloyd polled well to take second spot. After an injury interrupted 2002, Lloyd hit back hard this season and booted 93 goals. He won his third Coleman Medal and capped off his stellar season with his fifth All Australian selection. The 2002 TAG Heuer Player of the Year winner Jason Johnson polled strongly again this season and came third with 38 votes.

The fans recognised Scott Lucas’ fantastic season when he was voted in fourth position with 32 votes. As expected Mark Johnson also polled well. He took out fifth spot with 27 votes. Click here for the full TAG Heuer Player of the Year votes.
