Essendon’s Michael Hurley has been suspended by the club from playing in the 2010 NAB Cup and Challenge competition following an altercation with a taxi driver in September that saw him charged with assault.
He will appear in court on the 5th, March 2010.
Club CEO Ian Robson said the suspension was a significant sanction and will form one part of a broader response that would be announced soon.
He said Hurley and his lawyer are currently working through legal issues and that Essendon is working closely with the AFL on the matter.

“Michael made a serious mistake and he is extremely remorseful for his actions,” Robson said.
“He accepts that the club has imposed this sanction, and will take further action, and he will continue to fully co-operate with police and the courts.”
Robson said the sanction does not speak to Michael Hurley’s guilt or innocence on the assault charges and will stand regardless of the court outcome.
Essendon ruckman David Hille has declared himself a realistic chance to be available for the club’s Round 1 blockbuster against Geelong. Lining up in the Bombers’ intra-club hit-out in Shepparton last week, Hille, 28, showed no sign of the knee injury sustained during last year’s Anzac Day blockbuster, and is tipped as a near certainty to be available for the season proper.
