Essendon defender Nathan Grima won’t be buying into any on-field banter when he comes up against his old side tomorrow.
The former North Melbourne player joined the Bombers earlier this year after a successful back procedure following his retirement in the middle of last season.
“I’m just excited to be back out there playing – no doubt there’ll be a bit of fun out there during the game,” Grima said.
“Even though I love my banter, there won’t really be anything coming from me tomorrow.
“I’ve actually got one of the boys 30th tomorrow night, so hopefully I get a kick so I can still go and not have to face the boys after getting towelled up.
“It’s not really a big story me playing. Obviously Paddy (Dangerfield) playing in Adelaide is a big story because he’s such a good player, but for me I just want to sneak in under the radar and get it done.”
Grima made his Essendon debut last week against Sydney, ending the game with 13 possessions.
“Obviously I didn’t set the world on fire but I was proud of the effort to get back,” he said.
“Only in December I was ten kilos heavier and enjoying retired life.
“I need to improve on that (his performance last week) if I’m going to keep my spot.
“I’m happy that John (Worsfold) has given me another opportunity this week especially against North. I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing.”
Grima came into the senior line-up after some strong VFL form.
The 30 year old said his time in the state competition gave him an opportunity to develop his match conditioning but also see the talented young players on the Bombers list first hand.
“Because I’ve been in the VFL a bit I’ve been able to get to know those guys and enjoy it with the younger boys,” he said.
“It keeps you feeling young, my body feels about 100 but my mind feels about 20 again.
“I think Essendon are doing a lot of things right to build a good list. They’ve got all of their young guys coming on.
“I’ve got two teams to barrack for afterthis year and I’m sure they’ll both be tracking in the right direction.”
