Courtenay Dempsey has paid credit to the work of his fellow defenders saying the Bombers backline is not only stopping opposition forward lines but also setting up and creating attack.

Essendon’s defence is yet to concede more than 100 points in its first four matches this season, conceding an average of 69 points per game.

Dempsey said the backline had started the season in superb touch with each back man playing an important role.

“It is not all about running and attacking, the good thing about it is that we are keeping teams to low scores,” Dempsey told BomberTV post match.

“Not only are we creating off half back but we are stopping goals as well so that combination really holds up in finals football which is what we need.

“The good thing is we have guys that are out injured but then we have guys like Tayte Pears who come back in and just do the job.”

Dempsey collected 17 disposals and 7 marks in the 37-point win against St. Kilda once again proving vital alongside Michael Hibberd running out of defence.

“That is the good thing about it, if I’m not creating then we have Michael Hibberd creating.”

“We didn’t worry about all the stuff on the outside we just worried about doing our job on the ground and that is why we walked away with the four points.”

The dashing defender said the team was prepared for a blockbuster match in just four days time when they take on Collingwood on ANZAC Day.

“To be a finals football side we need to be up for these games and it is going to be a finals atmosphere on ANZAC Day.”
