Essendon midfielder Dyson Heppell has shot to outright ninth in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award with just three games remaining.

Heppell shared the top votes with Richmond’s Shane Edwards and Brandon Ellis in Essendon’s 18-point loss to the Tigers, each receiving eight votes.

Heppell was gallant in defeat for the Bombers, as he gathered 32 disposals, took six marks and booted a telling fourth-quarter goal, almost willing his team over the line.

The 22-year-old into just his third season is now ranked fourth in the league for total disposals in 2014, averaging just short of 28 disposals a match.
