Kommer calm under pressure
22-year-old Nick Kommer caught the attention of many on Friday night with 16 possessions and a goal in his first game of AFL football.
The mature aged recruit impressed in his first hit out in the red and black showcasing his ability to not lose focus on the task at hand.
“I think at times as players when things don’t go your way you can lose your way a bit during the game but he has the ability to forget about it and just keep playing footy,” assistant coach Matthew Egan told The Engine Room.
“We recruited Nick not to play VFL and looking at the way he played for East Perth last year he plays exactly the same way in the AFL.”
Egan credited the team’s improved tackling ability as a key to the hard fought win against Adelaide last Friday night.
“I thought our tackling on the weekend was terrific,” Egan said.
“We have worked a lot on it, in defense especially and Welly has pushed it really hard our tackling and tackling technique.”
“I think it showed on the weekend that we have definitely improve on that area, we have still got a lot of improvement left obviously but it just showed on the weekend that we were able to stick our tackles and our pressure around the ball was really good.”
Kommer was a key to the Bombers forward line pressure, which saw them boot 18 goals for the game.
“He (Kommer) hunts the ball, he is aggressive and he keeps playing footy,” Egan said.
“He was terrific, he was tackling, his forward pressure was great but he was also really clean around the contests.”
“His hands and ability to release to teammates was really good for a first gamer.”
Egan also praised the performance of Brendon Goddard in his first game for Essendon saying he would continue to play a key role across the entire field depending on the situation of the game.
