Watson’s injury was sure to have an impact right across the field and notably he led the way for the Bombers in score assists with 22 (15 goal and 7 behind) up to Round 15.
Few would have looked to Kommer as being the most important cog in the Bombers forward line but the numbers speak volumes for the impact of the livewire half forward.
The Western Australian has managed just four goals from 13 games this season but his ability to bring his teammates into the game cannot be underestimated.
He sits second on the club’s score assist list with 18 assists (10 goal and 8 behind) from 13 matches in his first season at AFL level.
Champion Data statistics place Kommer at second on the Bombers score assists lists ahead of Brent Stanton, Brendon Goddard, Jake Melksham and Jason Winderlich.
Forward line coach Matthew Egan said Kommer’s importance in the forward line is not underestimated.
"We recruited Nick for a reason, watching him play in the WAFL he was playing exactly how he is now,” Egan said.
“He gets to the contest all the time, plays with really high intensity and he wins his one on ones.”
“That was the sort of player that we looked at and thought we needed in our team and drafting him we probably thought he was going to play right from the start.”
The impact of Travis Colyer for an entire game was evident on the weekend as he finished with a game high four score assists against the Bulldogs.
For the record, who is on the receiving end of Kommer’s assists? Alwyn Davey has kicked three goals from a link up with Kommer this season.
