Nathan's ANZAC Day dream
If ever there was an inspiring story that reminds us all to celebrate the small things in life, it’s the story of Nathan Garcia.
On ANZAC Day, the 10-year-old Essendon supporter stood in the middle of the MCG and tossed the coin. An experience he will never forget and a heart-warming reminder of the power of football and the difference a football club can make on a young boys life.
So often, the heroics of the players on the field of battle take our attention. Accolade they most certainly deserve. But seldom do we acknowledge a young fan with such inspiring courage.
Nathan was born with only half a heart. He survived open-heart surgery only to be struck down with a second life threatening spinal condition at the age of one.
Nathan's infantile scoliosis (severely crooked spine) wasn't treated early enough. If it had been, Nathan would not be in the position he is in now.
His spine is slowly crushing his heart and lungs. This prevents any further heart surgery and eliminates the possibility of a heart lung transplant.
His mum, Monique, has been his constant companion and hasn’t given up the fight for her son.
Her dream is to raise One Million dollars to set up a team of researchers to give Nathan back what is being taken from him - a chance to live.
At the very least, the Essendon Football Club gave him the chance to live his dream on ANZAC Day.
“Nathan doesn’t care for tomorrow because it’s not important to him. He lives for right now, and right now, he’s living his dream,” Monique Garcia said.
