Essendon forward Michael Hurley has declared himself a certain starter for Friday night’s clash with Carlton at the MCG.

Hurley will return from an ankle injury suffered against Richmond in Round 9 when he landed awkwardly after leaping for a mark.

Some commentators have suggested Hurley should peg back his attack on the ball to avoid suffering consistent injuries but the key forward is confident his competitive nature is the right attitude.

“I am not as talented, fast or skilful as some of these other players so I suppose I rely a bit on my competitiveness,” Hurley said.

“As a key forward I think most of my teammates look for it and the coaches as well.”
Debate continues to rage over what position the 23-year-old is best suited to play and has this season booted eight goals from seven matches (Hurley has been subbed on three occasions).

“I am really loving the challenge of the forward line, I think it is becoming almost the hardest place on the ground to play,” Hurley told SEN.

“I am really thriving on the opportunity to play forward.”

Hurley was one of ten Bombers to travel to Boulder, Colorado in the off-season and believes the benefits he gained from that trip have had an impact upon his game this season.

“It was massive for me as I was the only key position player there so to run with the mids and spend that whole time with such an elite group of teammates and coaching staff it was really amazing,” he said.

“I benefited the most out of anyone there as I was running with the mids and spending the whole time with Jobe, BJ and Stants which was quite good.”

“Looking at the data in football these days, if you look at that after the game my figures are better than they ever have been so I suppose it is coming out in my game.”

Hurley said young star Joe Daniher is an exciting prospect for all Bomber fans.

“I can’t wait to watch Joey play, he is an amazing young player, huge and the way he goes about his footy he is going to be pretty hard to stop,” he said.

Michael Hurley will be making an in store appearance at the Bomber Shop at Windy Hill on Saturday from 11am.
