Essendon assistant coach Matthew Egan will take on a new role in 2014 switching from one end of the field to the other to look after the club’s defensive group.

Egan has looked after the forward line in the past two seasons but will turn his attention to the club’s back line this season with Nathan Bassett to look after the forwards.

After three seasons as assistant coach at Geelong, Egan made the move to the Bombers looking after the club’s forward line group.

“Bomber called me over the break that he wants me to take over from Sean Wellman so that is really exciting,” Egan said.

“I have really enjoyed working with the forward line over the last two years but it gives me a new challenge.”

“I suppose it is what I know best and it is what I taught at Geelong obviously playing there for a few years and then coached for a few years in development in defence.”

The All-Australian defender said he was looking forward to working with the club’s defensive group throughout the 2014 season.

“I am pretty comfortable in that area and I feel like myself and Sean Wellman are similar so it should be a pretty easytransition.”

“We work pretty closely together and last year we wanted the whole team to be a better defensive team so the forwardsworked pretty hard at that.”

“I think Bomber is going to be a little bit more defensive this year, that is the way he works, he believes a strong defence gives you really good attack.”

Thompson was senior coach at Geelong when Egan was a player and then when he made the move into the coaching box in 2009.

He is excited about working closely with Thompson again as his former coach takes over the season reigns for the upcoming season.

“I spoke to Bomber a few times already about how we wants it to look and he will drive me pretty hard with that and I will make sure we come up with a really good plan for it,” Egan said.

“He has only been back for a little bit at the moment but it is really exciting and I think he is going to give us really good guidance and teach us everything he knows.”

“I have worked a little bit with him in the past so I do know how he coaches and what he wants but I really feel his passion is going to drive us further this year.”
