Over 450 international students came together for yesterday’s Multicultural Round clash between Essendon and the Western Bulldogs.
As part of the GLoBALL program, international students were treated to an eventuful pre-match function at Etihad Stadium and watched Essendon overcome a late fight from the Bulldogs to secure a 31-point win.
GLoBALL is delivered by Essendon Football Club, Cricket Victoria and Netball Victoria, and the State Government has supported the popular program to enable it to continue until 2014.
The program provides international students with free access to matches involving Essendon, Melbourne Vixens netball team, the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades cricket teams.
Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business Louise Asher said the GLoBALL program is specifically designed to introduce international students to Victoria’s sporting life and make them feel part of the community.
“GLoBALL is a great way to learn about Victorians and their culture and to experience the sports that fire up everyone’s passion and energy”, Minister Asher said.
“The Multicultural AFL Round is a fantastic idea. It shows that anyone from anywhere can excel in their chosen field and the community will get behind you.
“It also highlights that Victorians value our multicultural heritage, which is why so many people are attracted to visit, study and live here.
“The State Government wants all international students to have the best possible experience during their time in Victoria,” she said.
